Regional Conference Highlights SOUTHWEST REGION ▲ AUGUST 7-10, 2014 ▲ ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO Southwest Region Reignites the Flames of Service and Social Action Deltas gathered during the 45th Southwest Regional Conference for an afternoon of fellowship and recognition at the Social Action Luncheon. The theme, “Reignit-ing the Flame of Service and Action as a Movement, not a Monument,” spoke volumes to the Southwest Region’s commitment to staying focused on pressing issues affecting the African-American community. “Being in the room with so many motivated and hard working sorors was amazing,” said luncheon co-coordina-tor Betty Lacy of Pine Bluff Alumnae Chapter. “It was a pleasure being a part of it all.” In the spirit of the ceremony’s theme, the luncheon also honored the inaugural winners of the Movement Not a Monument Awards. The inaugural awards were given to chapters who took the lead on various issues of impor-tance in their communities. The winners were: Fort Worth Alumnae, Houston Alumnae, Little Rock Alumnae, San Antonio Alumnae and Shreveport Alumnae chapters. “A lot of chapters did an awesome job being move-ments,” said Soror Lacy. “But the most important thing about the luncheon was the emphasis on how crucial social action is to our communities and our sisterhood. We have to keep moving and working.” Dr. Suzan Johnson Cook, honorary member and key-note speaker for the lun-cheon, reignited “the flame of service” in the hearts of all sorors in attendance. “She had the entire crowd up and reminded us that Delta is first and fore-most a movement,” said luncheon co-coordinator Joy Thomas of Fort Worth Alumnae Chapter. “The emphasis was on move-ment. Soror Johnson Cook reminded us that we have to keep up the pace.” 12 • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
