The National President’s 2014 Regional Conference Theme Address: Uncompromising Commitment to Communities – Service, Leadership, Empowerment Delta Newsletter SPRING 2015 • 5 Why are we here? We are here to learn, to fellowship, to interact with other sorors, and to re-enforce our uncompromising commitment to our communities through our Service, Leadership and Empowerment. And as we do that let’s also reflect upon what, as an organization—in fact the largest black female owned and operated corporation in the universe—has been our major challenges and our most distinguished accomplishments. Yes, this sorority year has had both valleys and mountains, but to paraphrase what Diana Ross once sang, “Ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no valley low enough to keep me from getting to you,” soror! ….Let’s spend time talking about our mountain top experiences—our high points—and there have been many. We are in the process of finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Institutes on Health—a first time initiative. We have developed a positive, produc-tive, and proactive relationship with the Federal Emer-gency Management Agency (FEMA)—again another first of its kind. In addition, we are maintaining our prolific, dynamic, and constructive 13 partnerships and receiving requests daily to launch more. All of our national com-mittees, commissions, and task forces have instituted and are implementing their viable, workable, sustainable, and feasible action plans. Yes, we have been busy since July 2013, but because of you, your belief in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and your uncompromising commitment to communities we will not rest on our laurels, we understand what it means when we say “no weapon formed against us shall prosper,” and we have definitely been focusing on the comma. We truly understand that not one of us can afford to let someone else pull her weight. Today, more than ever, we all need to be socially responsible and to take an active role in our communities. This is the year that you should know the importance of solidarity, unity, harmony, and agreement; the year to know we cannot wait for the storm to blow over; we must learn to work in the rain. This is the year to know a small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. This is the year to know speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves and ensure justice for those being crushed. This is the year that each of us in this room stands up and makes a difference. This is the year that we shall wait for the Lord; renew our strength; mount up with wings like eagles; run and not be weary; walk and not faint. Yes this is the year! If not now—when? If not you, who? This is the year we shall put on the armor of faith, walk in the path of righteousness, and stand tall waiting on the twins, mercy and grace—because this year we are walking in the path of a great legacy. My sorors, are you up to the challenge? Well, you need to know that this is not a journey for the weak and faint-hearted. This is not a journey for those still waiting on someone to come along to help them. This is not a journey for those who are still acting like Pyramids while wearing Delta clothes. This is not a journey for those who choose to bully or haze others. This is not a journey for those who choose to desecrate what it means to be a Delta. My sorors, 2014 is the year that we shall turn the ships around. To everyone within the sound of my voice: this is the year that we all stand up, stand tall, reclaim our neighbor-hoods, reclaim our heritage, and reclaim our God given and driven purpose. Yes, this is the year, 2014, the year of completeness, my soror, to be the dream catcher that our 22 Founders envisioned; be the bridge builder that the charter members of your chapter of initiation imagined, instead of casting a long shadow and quit blocking the sun; be the one who says on the day of my initiation I became a Delta—a dev-astating, energetic, longstanding, talented, accomplished member of the greatest organization in the Universe! I know that I must always let my Delta light shine bright. I know I must make sure that my little old raggedy patch never falls off the Delta community quilt. I know that my feet are anchored in the foundation established by our 22 Founders. I know that it is my duty and responsibility to safeguard the flames of the Torch of Wisdom from being extinguished in our hearts. I know thus faith, hope and love last on these three, but in Delta Sigma Theta the greatest of this is love. Oh yes, I am delighted, pleased, honored, humbled, and proud to be a Delta! This girl is on fire—that’s why I’m glad to be a Delta.
