Regional Conference Highlights MIDWEST REGION ▲ JUNE 19-22, 2014 ▲ LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY The Midwest Donates $10K to the American Diabetes Association Delta Newsletter SPRING 2015 • 9 The Midwest chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. came full circle with their commitment to attacking a health issue that continues to plague the African-American community. When Regina Harper was elected the Midwest regional director in 2009, she made tackling diabetes a regional initiative. It began with chapters from the eight states that make up the Midwest region holding a variety of programs to screen for diabetes and educate the public about symptoms and treatment. The Midwest’s fundraising efforts culminated with a $10,000 donation from chapters to the American Diabetes Association at the 46th Midwest Regional Conference, held in Louisville, Ky. The presentation took place at the hostess chapters’ welcome reception, “Glitz, Glam and HATatude.” Styling in Kentucky Derby-inspired hats, Harper, along with So-ror Gillian Griggs, immediate past regional representative, presented the check to Helen Overfield, Louisville area director of the ADA. As a result of the donation, Delta Sigma Theta’s Midwest Region was listed as a “Gold Level Team” in the Louisville “Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes” in October. Members were encouraged to bring a bag of sugar-free candy to the regional conference to accompany the mone-tary donation to the American Diabetes Association. The contribution added 32 pounds of candy to the $10,000 collected in a two-month period.
