51sNt ational Convention Cov era g e Sisters Keep Stepping: Reviving the Mission of Delta Sigma Theta JOURNAL Spring 2014 s33 With his inspirational mes-sage designed for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Centennial Celebration, Dr. Frederick D. Haynes, III, roused more than 2,000 delegates attending the 51st Nation-al Convention Revival Service July 12, 2013. Haynes, senior pastor of the Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, encouraged the Sorority to continue to serve as a “beacon of light” for poor and underserved communities. His sermon entitled: “Sisters Keep Stepping in Spite of the Storm” raised the consciousness of the members of Delta Sigma Theta by asking them to consider the opportu-nities they were provided as gifts giv-en for the purpose of helping others. “People are struggling and suffer-ing and you Deltas are to go out and bless someone else,” said Haynes. Haynes also spoke of the many Deltas who influenced his life and quoted many famous authors such as Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and Melissa Harris-Perry. The revival was a full worship experience with liturgical dancing by sorors from Washington D.C., Mary-land and Virginia chapters, as well as selections from the Delta Praise and Worship team. The Delta choir was led by Soror Kim Jordan, commis-sioner on the Sorority’s Commission on Arts and Letters. Gospel artist and Stellar Award winner, Jonathan Nel-son, entertained the members with some of his greatest hits including “Expect the Great” and “Victory.” Rev. R. Janae Pitts Murdock, Southern regional chaplain, served as the worship leader. Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, national chaplain, was on hand to welcome the special guests. “This has been wonderful and enlightening and I am just blessed to be here,” said Soror Georgia Elaine Parks, a member of the Memphis Alumnae Chapter. “I loved the music and the dancing and I feel rejuve-nated. It left me something to think about.” s by Glenise Cloudy Dr. Frederick Haynes, III, senior pastor of the Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, inspired members and guests to “keep stepping in spite of the storm” during the Revival Service.
