51sNt ational Convention Cov era g e Rev. Dr. Bernice King, chief executive officer of The King Center and key-note speaker for the luncheon. In speaking from the heart about the Zimmerman verdict, Rev. King emphasized that in “many respects this has less to do with the verdict and more to do with us.” She con-tinued by challenging women to be-come the souls of the movement in the nation. King asserted that although prog-ress has been made since her father’s dream, as a people, the needed prog-ress has not been made. She stated that an enemy of the movement is complacency and comfort in the prog-ress already achieved. King’s charge directed women to be prepped and ready to win back their communities by “praying vs. preying, working vs. warring and molding vs. meddling.” She ended with a message that every-one must reach across the table and feed one another in order to reach the “promised land” together. Three outstanding public ser-vants and members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority were honored with the Sorority’s most honored social action awards. The awarding of the Patricia Roberts Harris Award to Dr. Regina Benjamin, U.S. Surgeon Gen-eral, marked her final yet symbolic public appearance as U.S. Surgeon General. Alabama State Representa-tive Laura Vandiver Hall accepted the Althea T. Simmons Social Action Award. Finally, Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, challenged those present to “speak up and out” as she received the Mary Church Ter-rell Award. Soror Cynthia M. A.
