51sNt ational Convention Cov era g e Fifty+ and STILL Fabulous Celebrating 50+ Years of Service JOURNAL Spring 2014 s47 What do a soul train line, golden pompoms, and a live band have in com-mon? All of these things were present for the Fifty-plus Fabulous Years of Service Celebration held the evening of July 15 during the 51st National Convention. Members of the Soror-ity who were initiated in and prior to 1963 received a special invitation to attend this event. Nearly 900 regis-tered members fell into this category and they came ready to strut down the red carpet. “We may need to card some of these sorors because I am not con-vinced they are even old enough to have fifty-plus years of service. They look amazing,” said Soror Cheryl Turner, Southern regional director. The following members were ac-knowledged by their regions for hav-ing the most years in the sorority: So-ror Inez Kaiser, initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority though the Beta Zeta Chapter at Pittsburgh State Uni-versity in 1938; Soror Amanda H. An-derson of Federal City Alumnae, initi-ated in 1938; Soror Veola L. Thomas O’Neil of Los Angeles Alumnae, initi-ated through the Alpha Kappa Chap-ter at Huston – Tillotson University in 1942; Soror Julie Mae Preer of De-troit Alumnae, initiated through the Alpha Beta Chapter at Fisk University in 1943; Soror Hortense McClinton of Durham Alumnae, initiated through Alpha Chapter at Howard University in 1937; Soror Evelyn Robinson Har-din of Chattanooga Alumnae, initiat-ed through the Alpha Chi Chapter at Tennessee State University in 1936; Sorors Tessye Carroll and Joyce Dawson Sewells of San Antonio Alumnae, initiated in 1945 and 1944, respectively. Soror Josie Daniels, along with her committee, coordinated the cele-bration of longevity and service. A fun time was had by all in attendance, re-gardless of the decade of initiation. s by Michelle Lewis and Stephanie M.
