s Delta Sigma Theta Celebrates an American Legend Red Carpet Movie: by E. Misy Daniels In spring 2013, the Arts and Let-ters Commission selected the movie “42: The True Story of an American Legend” as a RED Carpet feature film. The movie “42 ” is a bio-graphical film written and directed by Brian Helgeland about the integration of Negro League Baseball player Jackie Robin-son into Major League Base-ball in 1947. Robinson wore jersey number 42 throughout his first year of professional baseball. The film stars Chad-wick Boseman as Robinson, and Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey, the then manager of the Dodgers. The movie was released nationally on April 12, 2013. “The movie was outstanding. The cinematography, storyline, casting and acting were stellar,” said So-ror Marcia Butler-Holt, co-chair of the Commission on Arts and Letters (2008-2013). “We cannot imagine all 42 that Robinson encountered. I applaud him and his lovely wife for all that they have done to advance social jus-tice for African-Americans and for es-tablishing the Jackie Robinson Foun-dation that awards scholarships to deserving students through-out the nation.” The Commission on Arts and Letters selected the movie as a RED Carpet feature due to the historic nature of its con-tent and depiction of the 20th century sports hero and true American legend who with-stood the challenges of insti-tutional racism, breaking the color barrier to become the first African-American player in Major League Baseball.
