Honoring National Headquarters Staff: Deborah Somerville Deborah Somerville has been an anchor and model member of the National Head-quarters staff for 35 years. So, it is no surprise that the National Headquarters staff was happy for her, but also saddened to see her retire after nearly four decades of ex-ceptional service to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Deborah Somerville began her career at Delta on a temporary assignment in the Membership Department in August 1979, which extended to a permanent position in Febru-ary 1980 until her retirement in October 2015. During her 35-year tenure, Deborah worked under the ad-ministrations of eight Past Na-tional Presidents – Soror Mona Humphries Bailey, 17th Nation-al President; Soror Hortense G. Canady, 18th National President; Dr. Yvonne Kennedy, 19th Na-tional President; Dr. Bertha M. Roddey, 20th National President; The Honorable Marcia L. Fudge, 21st National President; Rev. Dr. Gwendolyn E. Boyd, 22nd Na-tional President; Dr. Louise A. Rice, 23rd National President; Soror Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIn-tyre, 24th National President - and ended with Dr. Paulette C. Walker, National President. As staff liaison for the Mem-bership Services and Development Committee, Deborah served with chairpersons, Sorors Anna Johnson Julian, 4th National President, Bar-bara F. Curtis and Harriett Williams; eight executive directors; one direc-tor of Membership and Membership Services; and three directors of Man-agement Information and Communi-cation Systems(MICS), later called In-formation Systems Department(IS) . Prior to her service as interim director/acting director of the Infor-mation s8 DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. Systems Department (1991- 2015), Deborah guided the staff as the coordinator of Information Sys-tems – providing hands-on super-vision and training. Deborah has shown time and time again that team-work gets the job done. Her perse-verance is second to none. The following “snapshot” gives the highlights of Deborah Somer-ville’s illustrious career as a member of the National Headquarters staff of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The 1980s Deborah managed the comput-erization of the membership records together with the development and implementation of an annual mem-bership renewal process.
