52nd National Convention C O V E R A G E s28 OPENING CEREMONY: Deltas Staying Reclaimed, Renewed, and Rededicated Dr. Paulette C. Walker, National President, delivers the addresses the membership during the Open Ceremony of the 52nd National Con-vention. The Toyota Center in downtown Houston, Texas is probably no stranger to large crowds. Be-tween concert goers and fans of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, the Toyo-ta Center has seen its fair share of massive groups of people. However, based on the awestruck look on the faces of passersby and Toyota Center staff, they have not seen the likes of the women of Delta Sigma Theta So-rority, Inc. since 1972 when the city hosted its Delta Convention there with considerably smaller numbers. This past summer, Houstonians were able to witness nearly 12,000 women - all dressed in white and rep-resenting DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. over 900 chapters – walk-ing from the nearby host hotels to fill the seats of the Toyota Center – whose dome ironically glowed red each evening. These women, some educators, social workers, doctors, lawyers, journalists, scholars and fu-ture leaders, awaited to hear from the leadership of the organization. It is always silent when the Past National Presidents take the mic as they not only bless the membership with their presence, but also their his-torical perspectives and well-wishes. As a member on the Commission on Presidential Scholars, Soror Frankie Freeman, 14th National President, re-minded the membership of the over-all vested interest in education Delta PHOTO BY DONNAMARIA JONES BY BERNADINE WILLIAMS STALLINGS
