52nd National Convention C O V E R A G E JOURNAL Spring 2016 s35 corporate our Christian principles and we sup-port our ability to ful-ly understand that God promised a safe landing, not a calm passage.” Soror Deborah Liv-ings, a member of the Opelousas (LA) Alum-nae Chapter, said she enjoyed the represen-tation from different de-nominations at the Ecu-menical Service. “We all have a faith in something,” said So-ror Livings. “We have a belief in something and we Deltas are about mankind.” The speaker of the hour, Nation-al Chaplain Vashti Murphy McKenzie, presiding prelate of the Tenth Epis-copal District of the African Method-ist Episcopal Church, was introduced by her daughter and soror, Rev. Vash-ti- Jasmine Murphy Saint-Jean. Before Bishop McKenzie deliv-ered her sermon, gospel record-ing artist Kathy Taylor set the atmo-sphere, singing a medley of gospel standards that reinforced the Chris-tian belief that there is power in the blood of Jesus. Bishop McKenzie referenced Proverbs 31: 25 in her message titled, “She is Clothed With Strength.” “God’s got you covered,” Bishop McKenzie told those in attendance. She encouraged sorors to ignore neg-ative stereotypes of wom-en on TV and instead see themselves as God sees them. At the same time, McKenzie said, they must allow themselves to make mistakes and learn from them. Following the service, Soror Shandon Wilson, member of the Baltimore Alumnae Chapter, said the message would cause her to reflect throughout the convention and beyond. “I think I just really need to step more into be-ing closer to God,” Soror work in the purpose that He has for me.” s Chaplins from various chapters join Bishop Vashti Murphy Mackenzie to pray over the membership during the Ecumenical Service.
