52nd National Convention C O V E R A G E An Evening of Praise s36 Gospel artist Beverly Crawford performs during the Gospel Concert at the 52nd National Conven-tion. DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. BY ALTORIA WHITE The Toyota Center in Hous-ton, Texas was trans-formed into the “Delta House of Worship” on Sunday, July 26 as thousands of mem-bers and guests gathered to hear two gospel greats – Bev-erly Crawford and Donald Law-rence - give their testimony and perform during the Soror-ity’s 52nd National Convention. Dr. Paulette C. Walker, Na-tional President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., brought greetings, telling the crowd that she was “ready for some hand clapping and soulful stomping.” Both performers answered the challenge and did not disappoint. Crawford even color coordinated her outfit for the evening. “I had to throw in a little red for the Delta’s,” said the two-time Stellar Award winning gospel artist. Crawford’s performance, which consisted of mostly old school gospel favorites, brought the crowd to their feet. Her soul-filled concert en-ergized and inspired attend-ees. Crowd favorite, “Sweeping Through the City,” had the en-tire audience on their feet in-cluding the Sorority’s Past Na-tional Presidents seated in the front row. “I really enjoyed Crawford. Her songs were very spiritual and I really got into it,” said Soror Clara Franklin, of Florence (SC) Alumnae Chapter. “She performed some of our favor-ite songs that we often hear.” Soror Franklin has been a member of the organization for over 30 years and is a Delta Dear. Crawford not only gave a rousing performance but also offered a touch-ing testimony. She shared with the crowd how she began her career in the music industry and doubted her performance ability and her entire existence because of low self-esteem. PHOTO BY DONNAMARIA JONES
