The book tells the story of her Chinese grandfather who became romantically involved with her Ja-maican grandmother before his soon-to-be wife showed up to set up a “proper” family. She says her sto-ry begs the question, “What are the shades of black people?” She calls it a lesson for every-one. “It’s an opportunity to expand your knowledge, open your mind to learn,” she said. For Soror Josephine Bolling Mc- Call, her novel, “The Penalty for Suc-cess,” detailed her father’s lynching in Lowndes County, Alabama in 1947, providing a lesson for sorors in the present. “I want them to take away that this happened in 1947 - the same kind of thing is going on now,” said Soror McCall. “Everyone’s story has something personal about it,” offered Alon-da Williams, whose children’s book, “Penny and the Magic Puffballs,” helped her daughter learn to be au-thentically her - hair and all. “It’s a great way to help sorors learn about us, whatever the topic is,” said Soror Williams.
