Ella M. McNair Retires from DST National Headquarters, Ending Four Decades of Stellar Service BY BERNADINE WILLIAMS STALLINGS, CAROLYN MCCREA, E. MISSY DANIELS National President Dr. Paulette C. Walker proclaimed Monday, Feb. 28, 2016, Ella McNair Day during the 27th Annual Delta Days in the Nation’s Capi-tal in honor of her four decades of professional service rendered as a member of the National Headquarters staff of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Soror Mc- Nair recently retired from the position of director of Programs/Publications and Public Relations. Her first name, “Ella,” can be found in the word that best de-scribes her 41 years on the national staff—“stellar!” Having joined Delta Sig-ma Theta’s staff as a pro-gram assistant on March 4, 1974 and retiring on Decem-ber 31, 2015, Soror McNair has the noted distinction of work-ing with 11 Delta National Presi-dents and their administrations. Even though she was not on staff when Soror Frankie Muse Free-man served as the 14th Nation-al President, Ella was initiated into Delta during the Freeman presidency (1967-71) and lat-er worked with her as she held subsequent leadership posts in Grand Chapter. Several of the Delta’s Past National Presidents expressed in one word the attri-butes possessed by Soror Mc- Nair that benefited the Grand Chapter: “efficient, reliable, ded-icated, awesome, visionary, stal-wart, faithful and real.” In addi-tion to serving 11 Delta National Presidents, Soror McNair has also reported to seven Execu-tive Directors. That indicates to any historically knowledgeable Delta member just how much and how long Soror McNair has s4 DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. dedicated her life to not only the service, but also the busi-ness of Delta Sigma Theta Soror-ity, Inc. She has the distinction of being one of two DST employ-ees with more than 41 years of continuous service. Upon the announcement of Soror McNair’s retirement, Dr. Paulette C. Walker, Delta Na-tional President, stated: “Ella is to Delta as wood is to fire—es-sential, a life force, and the fuel that keeps you going. Being a re-tiree myself, I am happy to see her reach this stage in her life. I know that her love—that fire for Delta will never burn out and neither will my love and appre-ciation for her.” Dr. Walker rec-ognized Ella’s service during the fall Executive Board meet-ing and presented her a recog-nition plaque. Her colleagues at DST Na-tional Headquarters remember Ella with great fondness and are adjusting to not having her daily presence in the building, where she could be found multi-task-ing in her fourth floor office.
