PHOTO BY NYEMA VERNON JOURNAL Summer 2013 s21 professionally designed by Fiesta Parade Floats, stood 17 feet high and 55 feet in length. Over 15,000 roses, sprays of orchids, lilies, hydrangeas, poppy and flax seeds created the lush garden, sculptured columns, urns, and floral graphs that adorned the float. Detailed floral graphs were prominently featured on a rotating hexagon highlighting the Five Point Programmatic Thrust. The sixth floral graph was a replica of the Sorority’s Service Medallion. On the front of the float, a gold sculptured globe depicted Delta’s international outreach. A floral representation of Downing Hall at Howard University, the birthplace of Sorority, was crafted from red pepper and carrot flakes and anchored the rear of the float. Cheers from parade goers erupted at the sight of the float as it made its way down Colorado Boulevard. Members wearing crimson and cream lined the 5.5-mile parade route beaming with pride and excitement in anticipation of seeing the float that represented the hundreds of thousands of women initiated since 1913. The Sorority’s National President, Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre, current members of the Executive Committee and five Past National Presidents rode the float, cementing Delta’s place in the Tournament of Roses Parade history. Adding to the symbolism of the float were 122 outwalkers whose presence honored the 22 Founders and represented 100 years of sisterhood, scholarship and service. The presence of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in the Tournament of Roses Parade and the detailed design of the float encompassed the past, present and future of the organization. Words taken from the book that inspired the parade’s theme best describe the “places Delta Sigma Theta will go” when Dr. Seuss wrote, “Where you fly, you’ll be best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.”s Executive Committee and executive board members wave to parade goers during the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif.
