CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIION Founders Day Weekend DST in NYC: Media Day and Caravan JOURNAL Summer 2013 s25 Delta Sigma Theta’s Founders Day Weekend began in the early morning of Jan. 10, 2013 as members gathered at the Washington Convention Center waiting to board buses adorned in Delta signage. The Delta Caravan consisting of 18 buses departed at 1 a.m. from Washington, D.C. and arrived in New York City before the crack of dawn for the Sorority’s “Media Day”—a major media blitz of all the network morning shows to announce its Centennial Celebration. Upon their arrival, sorors were joined by members dressed in crimson and cream who reside in the area. Nearly 2,000 members descended on Times Square and Rockefeller Center outside the studios of “Good Morning America” and “TODAY” morning shows. Members held handmade signs, celebrating the Sorority’s 100th anniversary. Al Roker, anchor for “TODAY” show, described the “Delta takeover” as, “the largest single entity crowd we have ever seen. You see all the red, a thousand members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.” At the conclusion of the Media Day, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg addressed the Delta delegation and officially declared it Delta Sigma Theta Day in New York City. When the bus caravan arrived back in Washington Thursday evening, the National President, Cynthia M. A. Butler McIntyre welcomed members and guests to Founders Day Weekend celebration. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray greeted weekend participants and welcomed them to the city. s By Amber Wilton , Ed.D.
