CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIION Founders Day Weekend s The excitement and anticipation of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s Centennial Founders Day Weekend drew thousands of members to the Washington, D.C. area Jan. 10 – 13 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding. In the midst of the massive celebration, members returned to the foundations of the organization— deeply rooted in public service— by volunteering to take part in the 22-project Impact Day on Howard University’s campus and throughout the D.C. community, Jan. 11. To honor each of the Sorority’s 22 Founders, 22 service projects were scheduled around Howard’s campus— the birthplace of the Sorority. Activities ranged from volunteering at local schools for career day programs to assisting medical professionals at local hospitals. Organizers of the event were forced to turn away the overwhelming number of volunteers due to capacity limits at each of the sites. On the bus ride to Howard University for Impact Day, Harvard University student Soror Erin Drake of Xi Tau Citywide Chapter, was excited to “return home” to the roots of the century old organization. “I’ve been to Howard before, but not at this capacity,” said Soror Drake. “I can see the Delta tree and Fortitude through a Delta lens now. I study history and literature, and the historical reference and context is important to me. The gravity of 100 years is powerful. I can tell my kids about this experience years from now.” One of the first projects took place at the Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science in honor of Founder Jessie McGuire Dent, who was an educator. Chelsea Hayes, national second vice president, kicked off the event with a motivational speech. She encouraged the students to stay focused on learning and to strive to be the best S er v ice and C elebration Deltas Celebrate Centennial Founders Day Weekend with 22 Impact Day Projects By: LIBRA WHITE, Sharon A.
