CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIION Founders Day Weekend Delta Sigma Theta Toasts to 100 Years During Centennial Founders Day Dinner Founders Day Weekend culminated January 13 – the anniversary date of the Sorority’s founding - with a formal dinner seating more than 13,000 members and distinguished guests in Washington, D.C.’s Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The evening paid tribute to the 22 Founders of Delta Sigma Theta, the century of sisterhood, scholarship and service carried out by the members, and the on-going mission of the organization. “This is the dawn of a new day,” said Soror Alexis Herman, former U.S. Secretary of Labor, who served as mistress of ceremonies. After the invocation from the sisterhood’s National Chaplain, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, National President s36 DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. Cynthia M. A. Butler- McIntyre reminded sorors of the importance of the evening – to pay homage to the 22 Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. With individual portraits of the Founders lined across the stage, Soror McIntyre also recognized the descendants of the Founders in attendance including: the son of Founder Winona Cargile Alexander, the granddaughters and great-granddaughters of Founder Vashti Turley Murphy, and the daughter of Founder Madree Penn White, Grace White Ware. Soror Butler-McIntyre also honored the work of the leadership of Delta Sigma Theta – each of the past national presidents who were present – by presenting them with a special Centennial pendant made of diamonds and gold. Upon receiving her pendant, 21st National President, Rep Marcia L. Fudge (D-Ohio) said, “There is nothing like sisterhood. And there is no sisterhood like our sisterhood." After a musical selection by by Joi-Marie Murphy McKenzie National President and past national presidents toast to another century of service during the Centennial Founders Day Dinner.
