The Honorable Joyce Beatty U.S. House of Representatives “She represents the strength and tenacity in the heart of every Delta woman...” —Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre, National President JOURNAL Summer 2013 s The U.S. House of Representatives welcomed another member of Delta Sigma Theta to its ranks after the Nov. 2012 general election. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty will represent constituents of Ohio’s newly drawn 3rd congressional district of Franklin County, which consists of Columbus, Reynoldsburg, Bexley, Whitehall, and Gahanna. Soror Beatty’s election into the House seat, alongside Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (D-11th District), Delta Sigma Theta’s 21st National President, marks the first time Ohio simultaneously has two African-American members in Congress. Prior to being elected to Congress, Soror Beatty was selected by her peers to serve in the 27th House District of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1999. She also served for five terms in the Ohio General Assembly. During her tenure, she became the first female Democratic House Leader in Ohio’s history. She was instrumental in improving the climate for economic development in the state. She also fought foreclosures, championed STEM programs, passed financial literacy legislation and worked to help women without health insurance receive lifesaving cancer screenings. After leaving the Ohio House in 2008, Soror Beatty joined The Ohio State University Elected to the serving as Senior Vice President of Outreach and Engagement where she promoted community business and economic development; advocated for healthcare collaborations’ and led the University’s global initiatives. She left the distinguished position at the university to run for the House seat. “Congresswoman Beatty is a shining example of what it means to step out on faith and fulfill one’s greatness,” said Soror Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre, National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. “She represents the strength and tenacity in the heart of every Delta woman and I am proud to call her my soror.” As a freshman member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Soror Beatty has been appointed to the Financial Services Committee and serves on the Subcommittees on Housing and Insurance and Oversight and Investigations. She was also selected to serve as a Democratic Caucus Regional Whip for Region 10 which includes Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky. Soror Beatty received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central State University, a Master of Science degree from Wright State University, and completed all but her dissertation for a doctorate degree at the University of Cincinnati. She also received two honorary doctorate degrees from Ohio Dominican University and Central State University.
