DELTA FELLOWS: Cultivating the Next Generation of Delta Leaders The 2016 inaugural class of Delta Fellows with members of the Executive Committee, seated. PHOTO BY SHARON FARMER The Delta Fellows Program is the vision of our National President, Dr. Paulette C. Walker, who envisioned a leadership development pro-gram that provides a broad foundation for shaping and cultivating the next generation of Delta leaders. The program seeks to pre-pare future leaders by identifying and bring-ing sorors together to explore the underlying values, principles and new ways of thinking about leadership, the relationship between individuals and their community, and the responsibilities and new patterns of behavior in organizational effectiveness. The inaugu-ral class is composed of twenty-two sorors, with a select number from each region. “The Fellows Program is quite ben-eficial and incredibly rewarding in that there is a commitment to the professional development of individual sorors and 28 • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. includes intensive training that allows them to develop frameworks and apply theories of leadership,” said Soror Ann Jones, chair of the Delta Fellows Program. “It also provides unique experiences that are not typically available to those seeking advancement in the Sorority and in their professional careers.” A major hallmark of the program was the first Annual Delta Fellows Leadership Conference, held in Atlanta, Georgia October 27-30, 2016. Sixty-five members attended the conference which highlighted issues and trends in the field of leadership development and formal learning sessions blended with a variety of social activities. The opening session featured a key-note address from Dr. Walker, based on the conference theme, “Ignite the Leader in You.” Workshops, speeches and panel discussions included topics on “Spiritual Leadership,” and a special presentation on “Lessons in Leadership” led by three of the Sorority’s Past National Presidents - Dr. Thelma T. Daley, 16th National Presi-dent; Dr. Louise A. Rice, 23rd Nation-al President; and Soror Cynthia M.A. Butler-McIntyre, 24th National President. Additional topics included “Your Network: How Does it Help You Grow?” “Success Outside Your Comfort Zone”; “It’s About Time: Management for Quality Leader-ship”; “Leading When You Are Not in Charge”; “Empowerment”; “Nonprofit Management – Everything you need to Know”; “Maximizing Your Career and Leadership Success”; and a special ses-sion, “Straight Talk With the EC,” which featured a conversation with the National Executive Committee. “I participated as a presenter in a Delta leadership conference several years By Ann Davis Jones
